INGREDIENTS

  • 1 (1 lb) box of phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom

SYRUP

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

PREPARATION

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Take two sheets of phyllo dough at a time and crumple them into accordion folds. Arrange the folded dough in the prepared baking dish, repeating the process until both rolls of dough are used. Ensure the folds are evenly spaced.
  3. Bake the folded dough for 10 minutes.
  4. Remove the dough from the oven and drizzle the melted butter over the top. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  5. While the buttered dough bakes, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, almond extract, and cardamom in a medium-sized bowl (a bowl with a pour spout is recommended!).
  6. Once baked, pour the custard mixture evenly over the top of the dough.
  7. Bake for another 30-35 minutes until golden.
  8. During the final baking time, prepare the syrup. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Simmer, whisking frequently, until the mixture thickens, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  9. Drizzle the prepared syrup over the baked cake, then allow it to cool before slicing and serving.
